young farmers unite

I’ve been following news stories about urban agriculture, the local food movement and the increasing interest that young people are taking in farming for years. These growing trends make me really happy and I’m so glad that we’re part of this movement, in our own little way.

I came across this website today and it looks great! The National Young Farmers’ Coalition (NYFC) is a US-based group that works for young farmers by strengthening their social networks, helping them hone their skills through the facilitation of peer-to-peer learning, and fighting for the policies that will keep them farming for a lifetime. I love it! We need something like this in Canada (anyone know if there already is something like this that I haven’t found yet?). If not, anyone interested in joining forces to get something like this going?

Check out NYFC’s Young Farmer Profiles to meet some of the new, young farmers in America.

romance on the farm

The farm appeals to more than just little kids! My sister Stephanie and her boyfriend Cam came out to visit the farm a couple weeks ago and I captured some shots of them frolicking with the pigs, checking out the chickens and passing around a football. Big thanks to Cam for moving some of our trailers for us (something we can only do with a tractor!). My sister’s got herself a strong man.

Also on the topic of farm romances, Chris and Matt’s sister Melanie is marrying her fiance Ryan next week! Love is definitely in the air. xo

I’ve been away from the farm for 10 days and haven’t gotten caught up on progress that was made while I was gone yet. That said, when I went to let the pigs out this morning, I noticed some great improvements to their pen: better feed box system and the ability to now open their door without having to walk right in to the pen (no more pig poo on my boots first thing in the morning – yay!). Until I get back to documenting things in current time, here are some piggy shots from a few weeks ago.
